Research and Ideation

The Solution

When we began Project Yearbook, our goal was to produce a fully developed class yearbook for the Class of 2026 at the University of Rochester. To guide our approach, we conducted research on existing yearbooks from other universities and institutions. We examined examples from schools such as Cornell University, University of Connecticut, University of Maryland, and University of Michigan, among others, to gather insights into the logistics, structure, and design of their yearbooks.

The following are some of the most common sections included in yearbooks.

Below are some important findings that we discovered while researching existing yearbooks

We realized that traditional Yearbooks are expensive, requiring a lot of funding and may not be scalable for a student led team with a limited budget

Digital formats/templates offer more flexibility, as well

as lower barriers to entry and can be sustained longer, passing it down to future class years.

By pivoting to a template based model, we created a foundation that could encourage students to document their memories, reduce production barriers on both the student and the school and also be reused and adapted for future class years.

In the end, Project Yearbook is no longer just a one time product. Instead, it is a scalable system designed to evolve and change with the student’s personal experiences. We want to continue the yearbook and pass it off to the class council of 2027.

One Big Problem...

According to our student survey, the average willingness to pay for a yearbook is approximately $30. As a result, producing a university-wide yearbook, with an average printing cost of $150, would not be financially viable.
